Consequences of globalization

Niklas Potrafke and Jan-Egbert Sturm

Chapter 23 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Public Choice, 2025, pp 159-166 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter describes the political consequences of globalization. We discuss how globalization influences economic policies and economic outcomes. Economic policies include, for example, tax rates and public expenditure. Economic outcomes include, for example, economic growth and income inequality. We portray major theories and empirical evidence. In the empirical studies, we describe how globalization is measured by the KOF Globalisation Index. The empirical studies suggest that globalization promoted economic growth and did not deteriorate the welfare state. Globalization also improved gender equality and human rights. The empirical evidence about whether globalization helps to protect the environment is ambiguous.
