Decline of democracy? Part 2
Ronald Wintrobe
Chapter 28 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Public Choice, 2025, pp 194-198 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter applies the argument developed in Chapter 27 in this volume. I look at many of the reasons commonly adduced to explain the decline in liberal democracy: globalized markets, social media, increased inequality, mass immigration, identity politics, and new and successful forms of capitalist dictatorship. I suggest that they can all be boiled down to one: democratic liberalism is no longer capable of providing the primary imaginary community that satisfies the desire for belonging.
