Democracy and the quality of institutions

Pierre-Guillaume Méon

Chapter 29 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Public Choice, 2025, pp 199-205 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter discusses whether democracy and democratic transitions can affect institutional outcomes such as the rule of law, corruption, and political instability, and how fast those outcomes may adjust if they do. The evidence suggests that democratic transitions indeed lead to better institutional outcomes. Moreover, event studies suggest that those improvements materialize in a matter of a few years.
