Duverger's law and the seat product model

Chapter 35 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Public Choice, 2025, pp 244-251 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Duverger's law asserts that two distinct types of electoral systems, majoritarian and proportional, are associated with two distinct types of party systems, two-party and multi-party. Rein Taagepera developed the seat product model, which classifies (simple) electoral systems in terms of the product of their district magnitude and assembly size, and he then set out a number of logically derived (and empirically tested) quantitative relationships that refine Duverger's law by producing mathematical expressions linking the seat product to various numerical measures of party proliferation.
