The median voter model
Roger D. Congleton
Chapter 62 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Public Choice, 2025, pp 433-440 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The median voter model is the most widely used equilibrium model of the majority-rule-based proceedings of committees, parliaments, and democratic elections. This chapter provides an introduction to the theory, notes its strengths and weaknesses, and illustrates how models of public policy formation can be developed using that model.
