Chapter 79 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Public Choice, 2025, pp 571-578 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
We summarize the political economy literature on international sanctions in this chapter. After defining and categorizing sanctions, we discuss theories on why sanctions are used and how they work. Afterward, we provide an overview of the rapidly growing empirical literature on the economic and social effects of sanctions. Finally, we make some suggestions for future research on international sanctions.
