Chapter 8 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Public Choice, 2025, pp 51-61 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Given the recent backlash against globalization, this chapter discusses the forces that determine people's attitudes toward free international trade and capital flows. We start by presenting various approaches to measuring these attitudes. We then review the distributional effects of globalization and summarize the empirical evidence that suggests material interests are important in determining whether individuals embrace or reject open markets. Finally, we highlight the non-negligible role of non-material considerations in shaping people's attitudes. The chapter concludes by sketching some open questions and directions for future research.
