Public choice in the democracy of Ancient Athens
George Tridimas
Chapter 92 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Public Choice, 2025, pp 658-665 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter surveys the growing public choice research on Classical Athenian democracy. First, it summarizes major constitutional changes that were linked with significant political events. Explanations of the emergence of democracy are then briefly reviewed. This is followed by a public choice analysis of the Athenian institutions of policymaking, including the Assembly of the Demos, the Council of the Five Hundred, the Ten Generals, the courts, ostracism, appointments to office by lot and election, political participation, and the absence of political parties. Comparisons with modern democracy are also drawn.
