Chapter 95 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Public Choice, 2025, pp 681-689 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Politics clearly plays a key role in government decisions that subsidize the construction and operation of sports venues. Despite this importance, the existing research on the economics of professional sports facility subsidies contains no systematic review of the public choice and political economy applications to this topic. This chapter describes research into government support for professional sports stadiums informed by or explicitly built upon a foundation of public choice and political economy.
