Abstract:
The concept of “relatively absolute absolutes” (RAAs) combines elements of moral relativism and absolutism, allowing societies to maintain rules and norms while still questioning their validity. RAAs suggest adherence to existing conventions until there is strong evidence for change, placing the burden of proof on those advocating for new rules. This framework, associated with James Buchanan and influenced by Frank Knight, emphasizes balancing stability with the freedom to question norms, thereby avoiding strict adherence to either absolute relativism or absolutism. In politics and social sciences, RAAs support a dynamic process of continuous questioning and improvement without rejecting established conventions outright.
