A foundational perspective of digital business strategy for strategic leaders

Varun Grover and Gabriele Piccoli

Chapter 10 in Handbook of Research on Strategic Leadership in the Fourth Industrial Revolution, 2024, pp 235-249 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: The role of strategy in the information systems arena has been largely based on the concept of alignment between the business and IT strategy. In this chapter, the authors argue that the term digital that is prevalent today is not just a change in terminology but also offers an ontological distinction from IT that has profound implications for digital strategy. In companies that are digital first, the concept of alignment is being replaced by the concepts of visioning and configuration of digital resources. To get there, the authors identify two pathways to value creation and four transformational levers that organizations must undertake. They draw out the implications of these changes for organizational characteristics, digital strategy, strategic leadership, and conclude with some directions for future research in this important burgeoning area.
