Innovative data sources for performance measurement along the value chain
Matthias D. Mahlendorf
Chapter 15 in Research Handbook on Performance Measurement for Management Control, 2024, pp 280-301 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter explores the use of innovative data sources for performance measurement along the value chain. Performance measurement traditionally relies on structured internal data, such as enterprise resource planning systems’ key performance indicators. However, recent technological innovations enable the development of innovative performance measures from unstructured data sources. I review research articles that employ language processing, online ratings, images, sensor data, and other innovative data sources for performance measurement. I also provide examples from corporate practice that may offer promising avenues for future research.
