Chapter 17 in Research Handbook on Performance Measurement for Management Control, 2024, pp 320-333 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
We review survey-based studies published in leading accounting journals in the period 2012-2021 that examine complementarities in performance measurement. This review illustrates how the survey method allows researchers to gain insights in complex but highly relevant questions regarding the interrelatedness of performance measurement practices, providing a reference point for scholars that seek guidance and inspiration for survey-based work in this area. We also identify opportunities for future survey research that may contribute to our understanding of the design of performance measurement systems, their situational embeddedness, and their behavioral and organizational effects. Particularly, we recommend future work beyond pair-wise complementarities and that considers non-dyadic systems.
