Teaching economics online using cases

Chapter 10 in Teaching Economics Online, 2024, pp 148-166 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Students often decide to study economics because they want to understand commercial and policy decisions. It can come as a shock when they encounter abstract models, unfamiliar terminology and two-dimensional diagrams that don’t seem to adequately capture the world around them. Embedding cases into the teaching of economics can help students make the connection between the model and the reality. The learning is enhanced when cases are discussed with peers and the lecturer. In this chapter we explain different ways to design case teaching in an economics course, whether on campus or online. The lecturer needs to identify accessible reputable resources, create opportunities for peers to meet to share thoughts on the cases and provide a ‘space’ for outputs to be shared. The upfront cost will generally be outweighed by longer-term benefits. Patience and perseverance are important for both the lecturer and students.
