Liberal arts education and the online context

Chapter 7 in Teaching Economics Online, 2024, pp 93-109 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Liberal arts institutions have been slow to move into the online education space due to concerns about the alignment of the online experience with the liberal arts values. Expanding research into effective online instruction and the remote-learning emergency of the 2020 pandemic provide insights into ways that online education could uniquely support liberal arts values around community engagement, communication, and prioritizing academics. This chapter builds on the innovations and research of the economic education literature to identify high-yield interactions and techniques economics instructors can use to serve the values and expectations of the liberal arts context. Using these strategies, economic instructors could help lead the way for liberal arts institutions to reap the potential benefits from expanded effective online education.
