Born Globals or born nomads? The case of medical cannabis producers in Denmark
Ulrik Nielsen
Chapter 2 in Cases on Born Globals, 2024, pp 15-23 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The case studies the emerging medical cannabis industry, with a specific focus on licensed producers (LPs) in Denmark. The case study aims to increase businesss students’ abilities to understand and evaluate market opportunities in an emerging industry as only sparse knowledge about doing business in this highly restricted, regulated, and industry exsists. By introducing the challenges and opportunities in transforming an illegal industry into a legitimate one, with businesses operating under standard market conditions, the case study aims to challenge students’ understanding of the internationalization process of firms, particularly the importance of the home market and how regulatory challenges can impact a firm’s international expansion. Through this case, students will have the opportunity to test and scrutinize existing international business theories in an industry that is emerging in different geographic areas at specific times, at various levels (e.g., medical, recreational, pharmaceutical), with widely varying market conditions.
