Tairi Leis
Chapter 9 in Cases on Born Globals, 2024, pp 112-129 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Bolt is the first European mobility super-app, offering ride-hailing, shared cars and scooters, food, and grocery delivery. The company is operating in over 500 cities in more than 45 countries in Europe, Africa, Western Asia, and Latin America and in 2022 was worth €7.4 billion. This chapter presents a case study of Bolt from the perspective of the decision-making logic’s influence on the internationalisation of Born Globals (BG). Behind a company’s success and failure may be many different factors. Still, this case study is focused on the influence of decision-making logic used in Bolt company in the VUCA (volatility, uncertainty, complexity, ambiguity) and non-VUCA environment. The case is presented through semi-structured in-depth interviews conducted with the founders and management of the company. The chapter presents the widely used decision-making logic of effectuation and causation, outlining their main differences and suggesting scenarios for using them.
