Chapter 8 in A Modern Guide to Energy Economics, 2024, pp 194-221 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Energy security is believed to be an essential component of sustainable development for a fast-growing country like Bangladesh. In this chapter, we quantitatively analyse Bangladesh’s energy security level by employing the 4-As framework. We find that Bangladesh’s energy security experienced a downward trend from 2014, reaching its minimum in 2016, before rising again from 2017 onwards. The scenario improved mainly due to advances in the Availability and Applicability dimensions; however, the performance of the Acceptability and Affordability dimensions proved that country is yet to reach a level of energy security that is sustainable. We establish that, even though the energy sector of Bangladesh has shown considerable improvements in energy security, further policy initiatives with special focus towards symmetrical improvements in all four dimensions of the 4-As framework are required for sustainable energy security in the long-run.
