Why let the school community decide? The views of educational leaders

Abstract: What happens when students decide how school district dollars are spent to improve their community? Spoiler: They cultivate a strong sense of personal agency, build new relationships with their peers and educators, and strengthen important skills such as communication, problem-solving and collaboration, all while making a difference for their school and inspiring long-term civic engagement. This study aims to understand what motivated education leaders in Arizona to adopt and implement School Participatory Budgeting (School PB) - a new approach to civic education, civic engagement, and school democracy. Through interviews with ten education leaders who have implemented School PB, I explore the greatest impacts on students, school communities, and the state, key challenges in implementation, and recommendations for the future of School PB in Arizona and beyond.
