Students at the budget table: participatory budgeting in Chicago public schools

Abstract: PB Chicago, an initiative of the UIC Great Cities Institute, has facilitated the expansion of Participatory Budgeting (PB) across the City of Chicago. PB began in Chicago in individual political wards where local aldermen chose to offer the process to their constituents in a vote that involved aldermanic discretionary capital funds. It has since grown to become embedded into the curriculum in Chicago Public Schools elementary and high schools. Chicago’s public schools constitute the fourth-largest school district in the United States. This chapter focuses on youth involvement in PB processes in schools (School PB) and especially on the pathway to institutionalizing PB, which is considered essential for its continued growth and expansion, particularly in the political climate of Chicago.
