Motivations for participating in educational participatory budgeting

Alberto Ford, Gisela Signorelli and Patricia Sorribas

Chapter 5 in Educating for Democracy, 2024, pp 99-119 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: The chapter seeks to gain insight into the causes and reasons why people, especially young people, approach and participate in institutionalized policies such as the Participatory Budget in Education (PBE). We use a conceptual framework stemming from a set of questions that accounts for different theories of human motivation and define our approach based on Causal Attributions, i.e., to know how the subject is self-perceived and how it explains his or her own participation. We have embraced a descriptive and exploratory approach that enables the expression of motivations by means of a survey conducted with participants of the PBE of Universidad Nacional de Rosario (UNR), Argentina. It is our assumption that motivations for participating are varied, that collaborative designs interact with motivations, and that the same design applied in different school environments may encourage different attitudinal dispositions on behalf of the actors that integrate a community.
