Introduction to the Handbook of Counterproductive Work Behavior

Jaclyn M. Jensen, Sandy Lim and Reeshad S. Dalal

Chapter 1 in Handbook of Counterproductive Work Behavior, 2025, pp 2-12 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: In this chapter, we define counterproductive work behavior (CWB), describe the importance of studying the phenomenon, and argue for the importance of a Handbook of CWB. We then provide a brief thematic overview of the chapters in the Handbook. Specifically, across chapters, we identify 6 themes, some of which capture contemporary developments associated with evergreen research foci whereas others capture entirely novel developments in the research literature. These themes are as follows: (1) Conceptual Clarity and Measurement Challenges, (2) Role of Technology and Modern Work Environments, (3) Impact of Organizational Culture and Norms, (4) Psychological and Social Factors, (5) Impact of CWB on Individuals and Organizations, and (6) Prevention and Intervention Strategies.
