Chapter 10 in Handbook of Counterproductive Work Behavior, 2025, pp 166-187 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Workplace theft is often treated as synonymous with employee-instigated theft of company cash and/or property. In this chapter, we call for a more encompassing conceptualization that recognizes workplace theft’s various potential instigators and victims, as well as a more expansive set of resources that can be stolen. To provide greater understanding of how predominant conceptualizations of workplace theft came to be, we review the history of workplace theft research and measurement approaches, as well as key trends and findings. We conclude by providing a refined conceptualization of workplace theft and discuss fruitful next steps in this literature.
