Chapter 11 in Handbook of Counterproductive Work Behavior, 2025, pp 188-207 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter explores workplace attendance behaviors, focusing on the related concepts of absenteeism and presenteeism, defined as working in the state of ill-health. By considering the two behaviors simultaneously to understand health, attendance, and engagement at work, the chapter illustrates the complex, multi-faceted, and multi-level causes of absenteeism and presenteeism, their interdependence, and the positive and negative outcomes for employees and organizations. It also discusses some of the main challenges faced by scholars and practitioners when investigating and addressing the phenomena in the workplace, particularly in light of the diffusion of new forms of work. The chapter concludes with avenues for future research.
