Ozgun B. Rodopman
Chapter 14 in Handbook of Counterproductive Work Behavior, 2025, pp 245-260 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Counterproductive work behavior (CWB) comes in various forms, and individuals have different reasons for engaging in CWB. Unfortunately, CWB has serious detrimental repercussions for organizational functioning and effectiveness. This chapter focuses specifically on person-level antecedents of counterproductive behavior in the workplace. It presents a comprehensive review of the individual and organizational factors that contribute to the occurrence of CWB. It also provides insights into the theoretical approaches and primary mechanisms associated with CWB. After outlining key antecedents and discussing the role of attitudes and emotions, the chapter presents managerial implications and recommendations for preventing and addressing CWB. A deep understanding of CWB is vital because it helps us create workplaces characterized by high levels of engagement, productivity, performance, and well-being.
