Counterproductive work behavior from a historical perspective

Paul E. Spector

Chapter 2 in Handbook of Counterproductive Work Behavior, 2025, pp 14-32 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Counterproductive work behavior (CWB), defined as behavior that harms organizations and organization stakeholders, is primarily a 21st-century topic within the organizational sciences. Historical roots can be traced back a century, with a handful of relevant studies found in the last quarter of the 20th century. Two lines of research have emerged, one focusing on behaviors done by employees and the other on mistreatment received by employees. This chapter provides a historical perspective that traces the roots of these different research streams, and notes similarities and differences among the different CWB constructs that have been developed.
