“Everyone’s doing it”: a review of academic counterproductive behaviors

Tyler N. A. Fezzey, P. D. Harms and Bradley Brummel

Chapter 28 in Handbook of Counterproductive Work Behavior, 2025, pp 504-524 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter reviews academic misconduct as a prevalent form of counterproductive work behavior (CWB) within academic institutions globally. The pervasiveness of academic counterproductive behaviors by both students and faculty highlights the ineffectiveness of current strategies to mitigate these behaviors. We describe the most common forms of academic counterproductive behaviors, explain why they are so challenging to identify and punish, and propose proactive solutions for institutions to implement. We also discuss the role of emerging technologies (e.g., generative AI) in exacerbating the challenges associated with these behaviors. We advocate for a deeper understanding of the causes, forms, and consequences of academic misconduct to foster ethical behavior among future professionals, leaders, and current professors and instructors, emphasizing the need for institutional reforms to prioritize academic integrity.
