Chapter 29 in Handbook of Counterproductive Work Behavior, 2025, pp 525-544 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Recognizing the threat of counterproductive workplace behaviors (CWBs) to US national security interests, the Department of Defense (DoD) has invested millions of dollars in creating policies and programs to combat and respond to these harmful actions. This chapter provides an overview of the DoD’s efforts to address and prevent CWBs and their detrimental impacts on service members, military teams, and the military’s ability to recruit and retain a ready and lethal fighting force. We discuss the survey methods and measures the DoD uses to track CWB prevalence and progress, and how these assessments compare with civilian sector approaches. We conclude with a review of promising approaches that go beyond the sole focus of preventing CWBs to upstream efforts aimed at developing and reinforcing the interpersonal competencies needed for healthy and high-performing teams. A multidisciplinary perspective is used to incorporate legal, psychological, and organizational behavioral perspectives into this examination and review.
