Chapter 36 in Handbook of Counterproductive Work Behavior, 2025, pp 650-669 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
We focus on the aftermath of counterproductive work behaviors (CWBs) in this chapter. First, we summarize the impact and consequences of CWBs. Then, we introduce the concept of restorative justice, including the three core affected parties (victim, offender, community), and how it is distinguished from traditional punishment approaches. We discuss the effectiveness of restorative approaches to CWBs in that the approaches emphasize restoring the victim, reintegrating and rehabilitating the offender, and healing the community to have a healthier workplace. While restorative justice approaches offer alternatives to punishment and can yield positive outcomes, restorative justice is no panacea. Thus, we examine factors that influence the choice between restorative justice and punishment, such as the severity of the CWBs and whether the CWBs are intentional, interpersonal, and repetitive. We provide examples and a case study to illustrate various CWB situations and their consequences. Finally, we conclude the chapter with our recommendations for implementing restorative justice in the workplace.
