Chapter 4 in Handbook of Counterproductive Work Behavior, 2025, pp 51-69 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Workplace incivility, or low-intensity disrespectful behavior with ambiguous intention to harm the target, has received increasing attention in management research. In this chapter, we first illustrate the defining characteristics of incivility and situate it in the broader concepts of interpersonal mistreatment and counterproductive work behavior. We then explain how incivility is by nature a dyadic phenomenon that involves the target and the perpetrator as two essential parties, based on which we review the measures, outcomes, and antecedents of workplace incivility. Where appropriate, we highlight important yet under-examined areas of inquiry. Beyond the perpetrator-target dyad, we analyze how incivility can be construed from a third-party, group, or organizational perspective. To conclude, we offer some insights for organizations to create a respectful work environment.
