Chapter 5 in Handbook of Counterproductive Work Behavior, 2025, pp 70-90 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Scholarly interest in workplace ostracism has increased in recent years due to its powerful implications for both theory and practice. The current chapter is intended to benefit novice and veteran researchers of workplace ostracism alike by reviewing extant research on the construct, which enables us to highlight trends in modern research and uncover directions for future research. To achieve this goal, the current chapter begins by discussing conceptualizations and operationalizations of workplace ostracism, which highlights the perspective issue in modern research. We then review dominant theoretical frameworks in the study of workplace ostracism to identify which may be most appropriate for various types of research questions, followed by a discussion of extant findings that tested the validity of these theories. To conclude, we highlight present unknowns and directions for future research, enabling readers of the current chapter to produce their own contributions to the current literature on workplace ostracism.
