Chapter 3 in Research Handbook of Innovation in the Circular Bioeconomy, 2025, pp 33-52 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: The development of circular bioeconomy (CBE) may be analysed as a sustainability transition (ST) in and across sectors. This chapter takes stock of recently published research linking CBE and ST. The reviewed literature suggests that fragmented and precarious policy environments, under-developed markets, limited acceptance, and poor levels of capacity and cooperation across companies and industries are the main barriers. Some of the steps suggested to foster CBE transitions are to rethink research-society interactions, foster experimentation, enable innovative interactive processes and multi-process systems, support the development of multi-scale and cross-sectoral organizations, and provide multi-performance evaluation methods. Although new actor strategies and business models are discussed, radical approaches remain rare. Our discussion focuses on the implications of these findings in terms of transformative innovation policy and strategic management for actors aiming to contribute towards CBE.
