Developing a bio-circular value chain through an open innovation project: a case study of industrial tomato production

Chapter 8 in Research Handbook of Innovation in the Circular Bioeconomy, 2025, pp 117-137 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: The integration of biomasses is crucial for “closing the loops” in a circular economy. This integration has led to the establishment of the circular bioeconomy. “Closing the loops” requires cross-industrial open innovation processes because they can contribute to the development of new bio-circular value chains. For example, utilizing Co2 gas produced by large industrial firms and nutrient water from fish farming firms can contribute to the creation of value chains for new biobased products. Through a qualitative case study of an open innovation project in Northern Norway, where a diverse set of industrial actors collaborate for industrial tomato production, this chapter explores critical enablers for projects aiming for new bio-circular products and value chains. We identify three critical spaces the project engaged in Inspiration, ideation, and implementation. In these spaces, various key actors took on the role of ‘open innovation champions’ and guided the project based on relevant activities, knowledge flows, results, and solutions that led to a fully developed value chain and business case after project finalization.
