Chapter 15 in Handbook of Interdisciplinary Teaching and Administration, 2024, pp 262-277 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Health humanities is a growing field with elements of both interdisciplinarity and transdisciplinarity. Because of its relevance and growth, we argue that health humanities can be looked at as an interdiscipline. This chapter defines the health humanities interdiscipline, discusses its evolution, and distinguishes relevant subfields within the health humanities context. The chapter also identifies the health humanities’ unique relevance to the current higher education environment. It uses three examples from West Virginia University to highlight the various forms that health humanities curricula and research can take, using undergraduate, medical education, and professional contexts to illuminate the potential of this work across these frameworks.
