Interdisciplinarity and integrative learning

Marcus N. Tanner

Chapter 21 in Handbook of Interdisciplinary Teaching and Administration, 2024, pp 376-391 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter explores integrative learning, an educational approach transcending traditional disciplinary boundaries. It discusses the importance of fostering holistic and interconnected knowledge, addressing challenges in interdisciplinary programs, and provides some examples of integrative learning. The chapter also briefly contextualizes integrative learning with Perkins and Salomon’s notion of knowledge transfer and strategies for effective curriculum design. This chapter highlights how this approach equips students with critical skills for the modern, interconnected world.
