Administering an interdisciplinary program: a practical guide

Evan Widders

Chapter 26 in Handbook of Interdisciplinary Teaching and Administration, 2024, pp 454-469 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: The chapter constitutes an introductory guide on how to propose and administer interdisciplinary programs. It discusses the advantages of interdisciplinary program offerings as compared to traditional disciplinary offerings and offers suggestions for how to leverage the institutional programmatic reward structure and national data resources in the new program proposal. The chapter also suggests means to evaluate enrollment trends to enhance the viability of the proposal. Considerations for creating an efficient and effective interdisciplinary curriculum to enhance student success are presented. The chapter further provides suggestions for administering an interdisciplinary program and specifically addresses promotion, evaluation, and tenure. The chapter concludes with a discussion of student recruiting, mining student data and the advisability of a rigorous assessment and post-graduation feedback loop for programmatic improvement.
