Chapter 6 in Handbook of Interdisciplinary Teaching and Administration, 2024, pp 96-113 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Forming an effective team is not simply about joining together a group of people. This is particularly true when assembling people from different disciplines to form an interdisciplinary team. To be an effective interdisciplinary team, whether made up of faculty or students, requires an understanding of teamwork fundamentals. This chapter advocates integrating concepts from the social and organizational sciences into interdisciplinary courses. It emphasizes acknowledging challenges in diverse teams; addressing ingroup/outgroup dynamics; distinguishing the task and social dimensions of a team; and understanding that cohesion, trust, psychological safety, and conflict can all influence team efficiency. This chapter offers insights to facilitate collaborative work, encouraging reflection and discussion among interdisciplinary teams.
