Highly skilled health workers: migration, work, and diversity management

Abstract: This chapter explores the dynamics of highly skilled migrant health workers’ (HSMHW) migration, focusing on the effects and diversity management challenges posed by this global phenomenon. The migration of skilled health professionals, exacerbated by factors such as the COVID-19 pandemic, not only shifts workforce demographics but also places significant pressure on both sending and receiving healthcare systems globally. Through a comprehensive review of literature and various national case studies, particularly of the United States and Nigeria, this study analyzes migration patterns, motives behind migration, and the implications for diversity management in healthcare settings. The findings highlight the critical role of global diversity management strategies in improving institutional responses and ensuring equitable treatment in the workforce. Policy changes, enhanced safety protocols, and shifts in personal and professional priorities of health workers are discussed, alongside the long-term impacts on healthcare provision and workforce stability.
