Managing place and space in the context of blended and hybrid learning

Keith Smyth and John Smith

Chapter 14 in How to Use Digital Learning with Confidence and Creativity, 2024, pp 118-126 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: In this chapter, we consider a number of challenges associated with the effective management of space and place in the context of blended and hybrid learning, and the diversification in approaches to digital learning and associated means and modes of engagement and ‘delivery’. After exploring a number of broad ‘framing assumptions’ that can be observed following the experience of learning and teaching through the pandemic, the chapter then focuses on key areas of challenge that include: understanding our students and their readiness to engage; the ‘state of the estate’; specific considerations for managing blended and hybrid delivery; and orientation to blended and hybrid learning and teaching in a campus context. The chapter offers a number of key recommendations which will be of particular relevance for readers with responsibilities within and/or across campus and learning space management, planning and scheduling, and programme design, delivery and support.
