What should I know about instructional design models?

Sarah Pattison

Chapter 18 in How to Use Digital Learning with Confidence and Creativity, 2024, pp 149-159 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter introduces what instructional design models are and how knowledge of them can benefit academic staff. It presents three instructional design models: ADDIE, Systems Approach, and SAM. These models are widely used by instructional designers and are an effective introduction to instructional design models. It gives an overview of the structure and steps of each model, as well as sharing critiques. This chapter also acknowledges the limitations of instructional design models in general and factors that can affect the extent to which you can make use of them. This chapter also gives advice on where to start if you want to know more about instructional design models, either for your own practice or to better understand them in order to work more effectively with instructional design staff.
