DIY digital learning

Lee Skallerup Bessette

Chapter 26 in How to Use Digital Learning with Confidence and Creativity, 2024, pp 221-228 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: The current landscape of digital learning, especially if you are trying to do it yourself, can be a fraught endeavor; issues of surveillance, privacy, access, and equity are just some of the concerns that we are faced with. Using the lens of minimal computing, a concept originating from digital humanities, can help make responsible and productive pedagogical decisions around tool use and adoption. This chapter outlines the pedagogical limitations of the current ed-tech landscape, defines and outlines minimal computing, and goes through the process of thinking more critically about what digital learning can mean.
