Academic integrity in digital learning

Chapter 29 in How to Use Digital Learning with Confidence and Creativity, 2024, pp 243-250 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: In this chapter, I explore what academic integrity looks like in digital learning. I challenge the notion that there is more academic cheating in online courses, using empirical studies to frame an evidence-informed discussion, teasing out how there is no “one size fits all” approach to academic integrity. I present three key facets of academic integrity literacy: (a) technical skills, (b) soft skills, and (c) critical thinking. I situate academic literacy with the Community of Inquiry framework (Garrison et al., 1999). I conclude with practical examples of activities that can be used in synchronous and asynchronous digital learning formats to build academic literacy skills with a Community of Inquiry.
