Students as partners in higher education assessment in Australia

Abstract: This case study presents a narrative of the work of an Australian university course team engaging with students as co-creators in developing assessment in higher education. The chapter leans on Dollinger and Lodge’s (2020) Model of Student-Staff Co-Creation to outline the processes involved in a Students as Partners’ (SaP) project, using the model as an evidence-based framework for asking questions of the work, to plan more effectively for success, and avoid common pitfalls in student participation ventures. Presented in chronological phases, the model was also used to reflect on the work both during and after the project. The authors propose the value of well-considered and planned SaP work in increasing student engagement, ownership, confidence, and agency.
