Chapter 24 in Research Handbook on Student Engagement in Higher Education, 2024, pp 348-364 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter presents a case study of a whole-of-institution initiative to advance student success outcomes at a large public university in Aotearoa New Zealand - Massey University Te Kunenga ki Pūrehuroa. ‘Pūrehuroatanga’ is the name given to this work, a framework for improving outcomes for students and removing enterprise-wide barriers preventing students from achieving those outcomes. A transformative programme of work, Pūrehuroatanga is owned by the University’s senior executive team and supported by a transparent governance and management structure. It is purposefully designed to be strongly data driven and outcome-focused. This chapter outlines both the conceptual underpinning of Pūrehuroatanga as well as early reflections on developing practical strategies to lift and drive engagement and success across a diverse cohort of students across multiple learning platforms. We offer insights into emerging issues and challenges in advancing the agenda of widening participation and closing parity gaps, from a perspective in Aotearoa New Zealand.
