Recruitment of diverse populations into public health research
Dominick L. Sturz
Chapter 11 in Research Handbook on Health Education, Health Promotion and Diversity, 2025, pp 150-166 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Diversity in public health research is crucial for ensuring the accuracy and applicability of findings across various populations. This chapter explores the significance of incorporating diverse cultural, racial, and social backgrounds to address disparities and enhance health outcomes. It argues that without a diverse research cohort, studies may perpetuate existing health disparities by failing to address the unique needs and experiences of marginalized groups. The inclusion of diverse groups not only enriches the understanding of health influences and outcomes but also lays a foundation for developing interventions and policies aimed at eliminating health disparities and advancing equity. Additionally, engaging diverse communities enhances the credibility and relevance of research findings, fostering trust and collaboration essential for impactful public health research. This chapter will discuss the complexities involved in recruiting diverse populations and propose strategies for improvement, emphasizing the need for inclusive health policies and practices as guided by foundational research. It will also highlight the risks of non-diverse research cohorts in perpetuating health inequities.
