Chapter 12 in Research Handbook on Health Education, Health Promotion and Diversity, 2025, pp 167-180 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Community Health Workers (CHWs) are well positioned to assist researchers in engaging diverse populations in research studies due to their close ties to the communities they serve. This chapter will outline the primary obstacles that various populations encounter when participating in research, with a specific emphasis on racial/ethnic minority groups. Additionally, it will discuss the involvement of CHWs in research and present two case studies illustrating their contributions to different research aspects. The chapter concludes with recommendations on how to effectively involve and prepare CHWs in research studies to enhance the engagement, recruitment, and retention of diverse populations.
