Chapter 17 in Research Handbook on Health Education, Health Promotion and Diversity, 2025, pp 238-251 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The terminology “sexual and gender minorities” has been coined to be inclusive of people who do not self-identify as heterosexual or in the binomial social construction of gender. Hence, this is an approach to group people who self-identify as homosexual (gay or lesbian), bisexual, pansexual, queer, transgender, genderqueer, gender fluid, gender diverse, or non-binary, among other emerging identities. In health education and health promotion, we have identified these groups based on their self-identified sexual or gender identity. This chapter discusses theories and frameworks for research, strategies for recruitment and retention, and dissemination of research findings with sexual and gender minorities.
