Chapter 18 in Research Handbook on Health Education, Health Promotion and Diversity, 2025, pp 252-270 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
In the United States, the experiences of Black Americans are complicated and include historical injustices that have subsequently impacted their health behaviors and health outcomes. While improvements have been made, disparities exist between Black Americans and other racial groups on a myriad of health issues. There remains room for positive impacts on this racial group's health status, beginning with the research conducted to understand the complexities of the health issues. This chapter provides relevant terms and definitions, historical context for present-day disparities, examples of successful research efforts, and outlines best practices and implications for conducting research with Black American populations. The anticipated outcomes upon review of this chapter center on the necessity of the inclusion of culturally responsive researchers, regardless of racial identity, to respectfully work with Black Americans to minimize harm and improve health status.
