Increasing representation of Hispanics/Latinos in health research: a call to action

Ninfa Peña-Purcell

Chapter 19 in Research Handbook on Health Education, Health Promotion and Diversity, 2025, pp 271-286 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Increasing Hispanic/Latino representation in health research is crucial to reducing health disparities. Social determinants of health (SDOH) and the Hispanic Health Advantage (HHA), a protective factor, are contextual factors that need to be considered when conducting research with Hispanics/Latinos. Common challenges to involving Hispanics/Latinos in health research include mistrust of researchers and institutions, logistical challenges (i.e., childcare and transportation), a fear of physical discomfort or injury, stigmatization, and a misunderstanding of the research process. Building trust and rapport, reducing risks associated with the study, and considering contextual factors in study design, recruitment, and implementation can increase research participation. The Incipient Model of Hispanic/Latino Participation in Nutrition Research is proposed as a framework to guide Community-based participatory research (CBPR). This model posits that decision balance (personal barriers), cultural competency, and formative work (identified needs and tailoring to community characteristics) are three factors that can affect Hispanic/Latino participation in research.
