Chapter 2 in Research Handbook on Health Education, Health Promotion and Diversity, 2025, pp 10-25 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Quality research is important for the development of health education interventions and programs that are designed to promote health and prevent disease across the globe. Understanding the research process is needed for planning and conducting health education research. Also, it is important for researchers to be knowledgeable of the various research designs commonly used in health education to select the most appropriate designs that will enable them to address the research questions or hypotheses. In working with low-/middle-income countries, using the community-based participatory research approach should be considered for cultural relevancy and appropriateness. Lastly, it is important to develop partnerships and include mentoring/training to enhance the research skills of health education researchers in low-/middle-income countries. This chapter will provide an overview of the research process and research designs. Also, this chapter will include brief information on the use of community-based participatory research approaches in low-/middle-income countries and racially underrepresented communities.
